Hannan
LiftED Program Participant and Volunteer (2012–Present)
Hannan’s connection with LiftED began at a young age when he joined the LEAP into Literacy Summer Day Camp program in Grade 3. He recalls his first experiences as a bit overwhelming, being new to the camp setting and not knowing anyone. However, the inclusive and welcoming environment helped him quickly adjust, and soon, he was forming friendships that would last well beyond the camp. The following fall, Hannan joined the Saturday Morning Literacy Club, inspired by the fun and supportive atmosphere that encouraged him not only to enjoy himself but also to focus on strengthening his literacy skills, which greatly benefited him in school. He continued attending these programs until Grade 6, when his journey with LiftED took on a new dimension. As Hannan entered high school in 2018, he returned to LiftED, this time as a volunteer.
Working with teachers who had once taught him was a full-circle experience – he transitioned from participant to mentor, becoming a positive role model for younger students. Over time, he took on more responsibility, working as a Program Assistant for both the Saturday Morning Literacy Club and LEAP into Literacy program until the summer of 2022 and May 2024, respectively.
A Moment of Growth
As a child, Hannan often found it challenging to make new friends. He recalls a transformative moment during his time in the LEAP into Literacy program when he was placed in a group for a project. Initially overwhelmed by shyness, it was the encouragement of his teacher and the camaraderie of his peers that helped him break through his reservations. This moment gave Hannan the confidence to engage with others – a skill that has served him well in both his academic and personal life. Hannan sees himself as a guiding force – someone who helps others find the right path, offering a shoulder to lean on. His goal is to ensure that youth in his community can look up to him as a role model, seeing in him someone who has shared his experiences and worked hard to achieve his own successes.
Building a Future of Service
The lessons Hannan learned through LiftED have shaped his future aspirations. Currently studying with hopes of attending law school, he dreams of becoming a lawyer and eventually a politician – to be an advocate for his community and a voice for those who are often unheard. The values of responsibility, organization, and giving back that were instilled in him continue to guide his path today.
In 2024, Hannan was honoured with the Peter Oliver Leadership Award. “Receiving this award is an honour. It means the world to me to be recognized as a leader within my community,” says Hannan. “LiftED has been pivotal in making me who I am today.” This award recognizes outstanding youth leadership, community service, and commitment to LiftED and its community. The Peter Oliver Leadership Award, first announced at the Leacock Debate in 2022, was created to honour LiftED’s founder, Peter Oliver, for his philanthropic leadership and dedication to youth that spanned more than 32 years.
“Thank you for believing in the potential of every child,” says Hannan. “Your support ensures that programs like those offered by LiftED can continue to inspire, educate, and empower the youth of today, who will undoubtedly become the leaders of tomorrow.”
Hannan’s journey from program participant to dedicated volunteer and Program Assistant embodies the spirit of this award, reflecting his leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his community. We are proud to share that Hannan has secured an internship at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
“I am proud to be able to say that I have been a part of the LiftED community for so many years,” says Hannan. “Looking back, I am grateful that I was enrolled in these programs as a child and that I came back to volunteer. I was able to stay on a straight path and work on bettering myself through these initiatives, learning many new skills and meeting great people along the way.”
