Ajilan

LiftED Program Participant and Volunteer (2011–Present)

Starting 13 years ago as a primary student at Derrydown Public School, Ajilan became an integral part of the LiftED community. He first joined as a participant in the LEAP into Literacy Summer Day Camp, and years later, in 2022, he returned as a Program Assistant for the Saturday Morning Literacy Club. As a dedicated community leader, Ajilan actively engages with his neighbours, always striving to make a positive impact. His passion for both education and service led him to become a Program Coordinator in the summer of 2023. That same year, he proudly secured a position as a Summer Research and Thesis student at the Autism Research Centre at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab, working on his thesis as part of the neonatal neuroscience team at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

Ajilan’s remarkable journey wasn’t just about gaining experience – it was about creating meaningful change. His leadership, both within and beyond LiftED, earned him the 2023 Peter Oliver Leadership Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to his community. Whether tutoring students in math and science, mentoring youth through organizations like Youth Assisting Youth, or providing care for terminally ill children at Emily’s House, Ajilan’s volunteer efforts reflect his deep commitment to serving others.

“My experiences with LiftED have nurtured my growth as a community advocate, leader, and communicator,” says Ajilan. “I know for certain that the skills I’ve acquired through this program will be invaluable to my future career in health care.”

Today, as a student at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine – University of Toronto, Ajilan continues to inspire those around him with his perseverance and dedication to making a difference.
