Abubakar
LiftED Program Participant (2023–Present)
Born in Canada to Pakistani parents, Abubakar lives in Thorncliffe Park, where he’s in Grade 7 at the age of 13. He’s the middle child among his three siblings. His father manages a restaurant while his mother is a stay-at-home parent.
Before becoming involved with LiftED, Abubakar’s life primarily revolved around sports. His journey with LiftED started at Valley Park Middle School, where he engaged in Take the LEAD, the club program. Seeing his siblings’ involvement in other LiftED initiatives like the Saturday Morning Literacy Club further motivated him to participate. However, seeking a change, he looked for opportunities beyond athletics. Despite his shyness, Abubakar found inspiration to step out of his comfort zone. Through the LiftED programs, he began improving his communication and interpersonal skills. Participation in soccer and basketball in other programs provided a foundation, but it was Take the LEAD’s emphasis on leadership and conflict resolution that truly resonated with him.
Reflecting on his time with LiftED, Abubakar identifies numerous accomplishments and memories, including developing his communication and critical thinking skills. Embracing newfound confidence, he navigated school with reduced stress and increased self-assurance. Memorable moments include the opportunity to address MPs and MPPs at Queen’s Park and during their visits to the school, when he had the chance to showcase his skills and witness their genuine interest in his presentation.
Looking ahead, his ambitions extend beyond personal success, aiming to address poverty and effect positive change in society. With dreams of pursuing a career in law, Abubakar envisions using his skills and experiences to advocate for justice and equality.
